Background/History

EMPIRE originated from a lifelong interest in design. Inspired while travelling the world in the 1970's, Perry and Jill Coleman returned to Western Australia with big ideas and a lot of determination. Their dream was to provide stylish products and furnishings, catering to the individual looking for something not offered anywhere else. An early chain of stores called PEDLARS was the forerunner to what is now EMPIRE.

In the 1980's, Perry and Jill sold their growing business and invested in a 265 acre sheep farm near Yallingup. Since they were both raised in farming families, it seemed the natural place to escape from what had become a gruelling schedule. It wasn't long before the tranquillity of country life refuelled their retail spirit. An enticing offer of a vacant shopping complex in Busselton coaxed them back into the retail trade.

Not long after, an overseas supplier convinced the couple they needed to return to Perth and open a different kind of design store – one focusing on style and comfort while providing quality products and excellent service. The Coleman's felt like they'd come full circle.

EMPIRE evolved from the early travels of Perry and Jill enriched by experiences of managing successful retail businesses. With a vision to provide the latest trends and new designs along with indepth product knowledge, the business grew from strength to strength.

Introducing a new concept in design circles, EMPIRE is recognised for their massive showrooms allowing the customer to see how the furnishings would look in their own homes. With four retail outlets in the Perth metropolitan area, EMPIRE sets the standard for design. The old Yallingup sheep farm now stands as the EMPIRE Retreat, a showcase for design, comfort and resort-style living.
